China lauds Peruvian cuisine as the best in Latin America
Peruvian cuisine was chosen by Asian media as the best food in Latin America currently experiencing an unprecedented boom, which places it among the best in the world along with French, Italian and Chinese. A news article published by the Chinese news agency Xinhua and featured in several Asian media says the “boom of Peruvian cuisine” accounts -according to official statistics- for over 11 percent of Peru’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). According to the report, food industry creates new jobs, increases tourism, provides impetus to agricultural exports and has proved to be an essential factor of social integration. It also noted that 48 percent of tourists arriving in Peru are attracted by its delicous food. Xinhua notes that the Peruvian chef Gaston Acurio has caused massive craze among people for his continuing efforts to spread Peruvian cuisine within and outside the country. The article also remarks that more than 150000 people from all social classes attended Lima’s Gastronomic Festival "Mistura 2009" where about 400000 dishes were offered. It also quotes Fishing vice Minister Elsa Galarza, who reports that “the consumption per capita of fish, due to this gastronomy boom, has risen from 15 to 22 tons per year.”
