Visits to Caral increase after being given World Heritage status

Tourist visits to the Sacred City of Caral, located in the Supe Valley in northern Lima, have increased considerably since this archaeologic legacy was included in Unesco’s World Heritage List.

Ruth Shady Solis, Caral-Supe Archaeological Special Project (PEACS) chief, told Andina that in 2009 Caral received 50,385 people, some 8,000 more visitors compared to the previous year.

It is expected that this trend will continue in 2010 provided that authorities have been promoting the archaeological heritage of different regions of Peru.

“Peru should show the world the diverse wealth it has, not only the ones on the south. Thus, the foreigners will put their attention in regions like Caral, Chan Chan, Chavin de Huantar, Juelap, etc.”, she said.

“The cultural wealth represents a strength to promote the sustainable tourist development and with social responsibility. The archaeological wealth is our greater strength”, she added.
