Folk groups compete at costume contest in honor of La Candelaria

The second day of a costume contest in honor of Virgen de la Candelaria is taking place at Puno's Enrique Torres Belon stadium with the participation of 73 groups of dancers and musicians for the delight of Peruvian and foreign tourists. The correspondent of Andina news agency reported that the four grandstands of this stadium are packed of spectators who wear hats and umbrellas to protect themselves from the intense heat.
He said that to that moment, 36 folkloric groups had already participated, which had had eight minutes to show their art and skills in honor of the “Mamacha Candelaria”. Former Miss Peru, Karen Schwartz, participates as a guest in the contest.
In addition, it has been noticed that this year the number of dancers in different groups has increased, since artists from other regions such as Cusco, Arequipa and other parts of the country have joined.
The Virgen de la Candelaria festivity was declared Cultural Heritage of the Nation for being a traditional expression of the live culture that characterizes the communities of Peru’s highlands and for contributing to the national and regional identity.
The Virgen de la Candelaria Festival is linked to the pre-Hispanic agricultural cycles of sowing and harvesting, as well as mining activities in the region. It is the result of a blend of respectful Aymara gaiety and ancestral Quechua seriousness.
