Tourist arrivals in Colca Valley grew by 22.5% in January

The number of tourists visiting the Colca Valley in Peru's Arequipa region grew by 22.5 percent in January compared to the same month last year, Colca Autonomous Authority (AutoColca) president Jose Luis Talavera said Sunday.
Talavera pointed out that 11,320 tourists visited the Colca Valley in January while there were 9,200 visitors in the same month last year, which suggests that 2010 will be a good year for tourism.
The AutoColca head added that this tourism growth in Colca Valley, especially in the last week of Januray, was influenced by the temporary closure of Machu Picchu as a result of heavy rains and floods in Cusco.
Regarding foreign tourists arrivals in January, 8% were Argentine tourists, 7% Americans, 6% Brazilians, 5% French, 4% Germans and Chileans, and 3% Colombians, among other tourists from different countries.
Meanwhile it was reported that 35% were local tourists, and AutoColca is planning to increase this year's figures with domestic tourism promotion.
