Over 25,000 tourists visited Colca in Jan-Feb 2010

Over 25,000 tourists visited the Colca Valley in Arequipa during the first two months of 2010, up 20 percent compared to the same period last year, said the head of Colca Autonomous Authority (Autocolca), Jose Luis Talavera.

He pointed out that tourist arrivals have steadily increased since late January following the temporary closure of Peru's top tourist attraction Machu Picchu and thanks to an aggressive promotional campaign launched two years ago.

“The campaign has achieved good results with increased visitor arrivals and more tourists showing significantly greater interest in visiting this natural area,” he said.

The official added that most tourists visiting Colca Valley these days come from Argentina, Chile and Brazil; "while European and American citizens visit this tourist attraction all year long."

The Colca Valley is approximately 162 km/97 miles north of Arequipa, about three hours and 45 minutes by bus.
