Over 6,000 tourists visiting Arequipa assisted by Iperu in first tw
Iperú, a tourism information office run by Peru’s Export and Tourism Promotion Board (PromPerú), helped 6,157 tourists visiting Arequipa during the first two months of the year.
PromPerú official Yemeth Murguia said that only in February 3,154 people received tourism-related information at Iperu booths, a 7.1 percent year-on-year growth driven by increased tourist arrivals due to the temporary closure of Machu Picchu.
Yermeth Murguia explained that visitor arrivals substantially increased in late January and February after Peru's top tourist attraction Machu Picchu was closed due to heavy rains and floods that cut off access to the citadel.
However, the official pointed out that based on the number of tourists helped by Iperú, visitor arrivals in Arequipa have gradually dropped so far in March.
